Clive Jenkins at Sutton House

Clive Jenkins at Sutton House

Description

Our upcoming exhibition kicking off 2019 tells the story of the near 30 years when Clive Jenkins and the ASTMS (Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staffs ) trade union were based at Sutton House. The exhibition is coupled with a self-guided tour of Sutton House, taking visitors through 500 years of Hackney history, including Tudor, Georgian, Victorian and 1980s historic rooms.

The link between East London and influential left-wing politics has never been overstated and we at Sutton House would like to take a good long look at our radical traditions. Clive Jenkins was a disciplined, charismatic union leader, known for his acerbic wit and his lifelong dedication to the people he served, as well as his role as a divisive but influential figure in the Labour party.

Visitors will be able to explore a recreation of Clive’s office, in the rather ostentatious grand Linenfold Parlour, as well as being granted access to never before seen collection material. With support from our volunteers, we’ll use images and accounts from our archive to recreate the spirit of Clive and the ASTMS in the place he would have worked.
