Blood, sweat and tears – UFC Fight Night at the O2 Arena

Rating:

By Ian Cater, Chief Features Writer

Go and see the Ultimate Fighting Championship, they said.  You’ll love it.  It’s the hottest ticket in town.  Well, for much of Saturday Fight Night at a packed O2 Arena, I wasn’t sure.  There were too few knockouts.  Too much grappling, too little drama.  Too many irritants with topknots sitting around me making moronic wolf noises for no discernible reason.

Then came the main event: British middleweight Michael Bisping against Brazilian Anderson Silva, regarded by many as the greatest fighter ever to have entered an Octagon.  Despite my scepticism, the pair put on a contest that fans of the sport will never forget: a topsy-turvy five rounds of controversy that continued up to the moment the judges’ decisions were announced.

Finally, I could see what all the fuss was about and maybe – just maybe – I’d consider going again.

Q&A: Barney Douglas, Director of ‘Warriors’

By Ian Cater, Chief Features Writer

Barney Douglas is a British documentary maker and Creative Director of Heavy Soul Films. ‘Warriors’ is Barney’s first feature-length documentary, released in UK cinemas in November 2015 to critical acclaim.  The film tells the story of a group of Maasai warriors who form a cricket team and use the publicity to campaign against FGM in their community.  You can read a full review of the film here.

‘Warriors’ was released on DVD and iTunes on Monday 25th January 2016.  The original score, co-written by Barney, is also available on iTunes now.

‘Warriors’ – A heartwarming story for those who don’t like cricket and those who love it

Rating:

By Ian Cater, Chief Features Writer

It’s not often you’re asked to review a film about cricket, the Maasai tribe and female genital mutilation (FGM), but Barney Douglas’ directorial debut successfully draws these strands into a heartwarming and sensory piece.

‘Warriors’ is a work of genuine artistic merit that is – for the first time since 10cc’s Dreadlock Holiday – as enjoyable for those who don’t like cricket (oh, no) as for those who love it.  That’s because ‘Warriors’ isn’t really about cricket, despite England fast bowler Jimmy Anderson being the film’s Executive Producer.  Nor is it really about tribal culture or FGM.  It’s a documentary about role models and courage, about using a platform to stand up for causes you believe in.

And this is a message as applicable to Londoners as to anyone else.

E.G.P runs for Refuge

Getting museum artworks on your walls while supporting victims of domestic violence has been made possible by Galerie E.G.P!

Galerie E.G.P is a Paris based contemporary art gallery founded in 2009 by Reine Okuliar and Lydie Ullmann and opened the doors to its London office in 2013. Like the rest of us E.G.P’s team was staggered when during the month of October alone, Amanda Hutton’s trial and Keanu William’s death shocked the UK whilst France was outraged at the disappearance and death of five-year-old Fiona. However with 2 women a week being killed in the UK alone due to domestic violence, this is clearly just the tip of the iceberg. Galerie E.G.P felt the urge to do its part to raise awareness about this issue.
