Memphis – The Musical at Shaftesbury Theatre

Tony-award winning musical Memphis opened in the West End last week, with Beverley Knight taking centre stage as Felicia, a struggling club singer in 1950s Tennessee. When budding-radio presenter Huey Calhoun discovers Felicia, it begins a musical revolution throughout America. Cue rock n roll, blues and jazz as Felicia and her brother prepare to take over the music scene.

Beverley Knight shines as the strong yet meek Felicia, Her range is untimely and her acting is more than believable. Knight proves once again, (following her stint in The Bodyguard) that her acting and vocal skills are worthy of a West End lead.

After its run at the Chichester Festival The Pajama Game has deservedly, and rightly taken up its residence in the heart of the West End, at the Shaftesbury Theatre. Richard Eyre’s delightful production on the surface appears to be about labour disputes and the growing influence of capital, but once you delve into Eyre’s production, through the demonstration of dance and song, there are numerous romantic entanglements, that ensure The Pajama Game is a joyful production to behold. At the heart of The Pajama Game is a blend of musical prowess, energetic dancing, and joyful sounds that together whip up a musical storm at the Shaftesbury.
