Memphis – The Musical at Shaftesbury Theatre

Tony-award winning musical Memphis opened in the West End last week, with Beverley Knight taking centre stage as Felicia, a struggling club singer in 1950s Tennessee. When budding-radio presenter Huey Calhoun discovers Felicia, it begins a musical revolution throughout America. Cue rock n roll, blues and jazz as Felicia and her brother prepare to take over the music scene.

Beverley Knight shines as the strong yet meek Felicia, Her range is untimely and her acting is more than believable. Knight proves once again, (following her stint in The Bodyguard) that her acting and vocal skills are worthy of a West End lead.

The Commitments: A soulful masterpiece

Roddy Doyle’s story of the rise and fall of a young soulful Dublin band began life as a novel in 1987, was subsequently turned into a film in 1991 by Alan Parker, and has now been transformed into a smash-hit stage show. The Commitments is more than just a story of a bunch of Irish youngsters forming a band, it was a portrait of a time that music has since forgotten. The Commitments earthy, yet soulful indie sounds and sexual innuendos, brings chaotic 1980s Dublin to the heart of London, in a charming and exhilarating manner. Jamie Lloyd’s production is gritty, raucous and full of soul; The Commitments (a tribute to their working class ethics and roots) brought the Palace theatre roof down with their mesmerising musical performance.
