As always, setting the scene is a vital aspect of a visit to The Jack. This time, literally stepping into a Hockney-esque painted ‘pool’ can feel quite disconcerting. The attractive and effective set by David Shields makes full use of Amy Mae Smith’s transcendent lighting; birthing those lovely rippling reflections of sunlight-on-water. Kate Bannister comments that “the designers have done a cracking job…” and likewise the director. The sound-scaping by Mark Webber is exemplary.

I admit to balking at the sight of the cast warming-up but as soon as the action started I realised it was an in-joke. “The playwright [Terrence McNally] asks your indulgence as do the actors…” Each performer is referred to by their real name and ‘baptised’ into character, stepping forward to address the audience. It holds a mirror to ourselves and we wince at the glass. Ironic that the play requires ‘belief’ or what McNally himself refers to as ‘spirituality’. I certainly had to suspend disbelief in the ‘healing’ of Philip, a fearsomely slithery rent-boy embodied by Ben Peterson. Otherwise, the piece is a curio; a contemplation on man’s obsession with sex and power.
