The Axis of Awesome: Viva La VIda Loca Las Vegas

If anyone is in Leicester Square this week and comes across human faces floating on the breeze like oversized autumn leaves, don’t be alarmed. The explanation is simple. On Saturday night, comedy-rock legends, The Axis Of Awesome, blew these faces clean off the skulls of their enthralled audience. The now faceless audience were there to see TAOA’s newest show ‘Viva La Vida Loca Las Vegas’. I think it’s fair to say at this point that if comedy awards were ever given out for ‘Best Comedy Show Title’, then this show title would take the biscuit, the tin and the entire kitchen cupboard.

The band treated its audience to some new stuff, but they were also more than happy to dish out some of the “hits”. A re-worked version of the hugely popular Four Chord Song went down an absolute storm, as did the brilliant Birdplane. “I’m more than a bird. I’m more than a plane. I’m a bird plane” is, quite possibly, the best lyric ever written…by anyone…ever.

Their deconstruction of the boy band genre is spot on. If you came in late, had never seen the Backstreet Boys and had temporarily misplaced your eyeballs, you might even think you were watching Nick Carter and his friends strut their stuff.

Somewhat like an Australian Jack Black, Jordan Raskopoulos is an excellent comedy-rock front man. He’s loud, proud and channels the gods of thunder into a highly watchable stage presence.

If I’m being completely honest, the show falls a bit flat in the middle and could probably do with some cosmetic surgery. The banter between the guys is a bit bumpy and the jokes around Benny’s height get more than a little tiresome (see what I did there?). Elsewhere, a bi-lingual love song touches magnificence before souring like warm milk thanks to an unnecessary salute. Other than the issues stated here, there’s not a lot else to fault with TAOA’s ‘VLVLLV’.

Turn your amps all the way up to 11, because these boys are awesome-ish!
