Dig deep into the world of words at the London Literature Festival (3- 12 July)

Heading into it’s sixth year is the London Literature Festival. Located in the capital’s Southbank Centre, writers from all over the globe will join together to celebrate the world of literature as we know it. Writers from London to as far as Mumbai will share their passion for literature through discussions, performances and more.

With over 50 events set to take place at the centre in conjunction with the festival, there will be loads to get involved in. We have selected a few to prepare you for what’s in store.

Southbank Centre Creative Writing School

Being held as part of the Literature Festival is the Southbank Centre’s Creative Writing School. Run on a monthly basis, the popular creative writing sessions offer two hours of intensive practical writing sessions.

For July’s segment Greg Mosse, MA programme leader for CW at West Dean College will be in attendance to assess work and offer advice to develop your writing skills.

The usually sold-out event has a few tickets left for two classes – 5th July at 6:30pm and 8th July at 4:30pm. It is strongly advised that you book your tickets as soon as possible to avoid any disappointment.

Londoners – Exhibition

Taking a look at the ordinary lives of people in the capital, author of Londoners’ book Craig Taylor will exhibit some of the snapshots taken from his work at the festival. Taylor (author of City Walks – London and A Million Tiny Plays About Britain) will discuss the book with an audience and take any questions. The event will take place Sunday 8th July and tickets are £8 each.

Live and On Loan

Celebrating their collection of poetry reaching over 100 years is the Poetry Library at the Live and On Loan event. Joining their celebration with the literature festival this year, poet and storyteller Rachel Rose will dig through the library’s full collection and the memories of past members to discover some fresh finds on the LitFest blog.

This will then be followed by the festival launch night where Rachel Rose will pick work from a host of poets including Karen McCarthy Woolf, Malika Booker and Raymond Antrobus. The poets will read their favourite pieces from the collection, as well as some of their own work.

Live and On Loan will take place July 3rd. Admission to the event is free but space is very limited. Book your place by sending an e-mail over to specialedition@poetrylibrary.org.uk

StorySLAM: Live

Do you have incredible writing skills but never had a place to show off your talent? The StorySLAM: Live is the perfect event for you to impress the world with your creative work. Impress the panel of judges including the likes of Flash Fiction author Femi Martin with a five minute story.

You can join the event simply just to watch entrants or register to read your work live on the stage. The night will be hosted by leading spoken word artist Charlie Dark on 12th July and tickets are priced at £8 each.
